Transatlantic shipping started in 1964 between England
and the Continent. This lead to the international standardization
and general adoption of containers and container ships.
The size of the containers was determined in English measurement
units ’feet’ and ’inches’. This is still in practice. The most commonly
used containers are as follows: standardized box containers of sizes
20, 30 and 40 feet. There are special containers to comply with the
various ways of loading and to adapt to the different types of merchandise.
Some examples: cooling, open top, high cube, flat rack, flat bed,
etc.
Container shipping is prevalent and is practically compulsory in
transatlantic shipping. The wide use of containers is obviously due
to its many virtues, like the following: The containers are fit for
transporting any type of merchandise. They can be closed hermetically.
They protect the merchandise from damages caused by weather and pilferage.
They also protect the merchandise during trans-shipment. Containers
can be easily and speedly moved with mechanical tools. They are easy
to transport on road, by rail and on water.
Containers are owned by shipping and/ or leasing companies. The
normal box type containers can be picked up for export purposes at
any time and at any Hungarian depot. They can be taken for loading
immediately and transported to an incountry destination within 24
hours if required.
Most of the shipping companies have already set up container depots
in Hungary. Thus they provide the possibility to turn in imported
containers at a relatively cheap price.
Empty and loaded containers are usually being forwarded by daily
train services between European ports and Hungarian destinations.
In case it is required we are able to execute forwarding of these
containers by road transport too.
Containers are forwarded to loading and unloading points within
Hungary by road transportation. At packing, loading and in case of
personal goods we aid our customers with professional advice. However,
Formentor Ltd is not directly involved in these activities.
Short sea shipping of containers is also advantageous in Europe.
This way of transportation is not only environment friendly, but
also at a favorable rate. Short sea shipping can be done for example
to/from: England, Ireland, Baltic and Scandinavian countries and
across the Mediterranean and Black Seas. The latter is expected to
develope apace.
Your enquiry is expected by our staff with up to date short sea
shipping opportunities and up to date offers.
